Team building that survives contact with a real group

Most corporate team building fails for reasons that have nothing to do with the activities. It fails because teams were self-selected, because the physically confident dominated, or because it rained and there was no plan. All three are solvable at the design stage.

Corporate team building activity on a Phu Quoc beach

Three design decisions that matter more than the activity

01

Assign the teams

If people pick their own teams they pick the colleagues they already know, and the cross-department mixing that justified the budget does not happen. We assign, mixing departments and seniority.

02

Do not make it only physical

A purely athletic format hands the day to the fittest third of the group and quietly excludes everyone else. Every programme we run mixes physical, problem-solving and creative challenges so the scoring does not correlate with fitness.

03

Decide the rain plan in advance

Not on the morning. The indoor alternative is written into the programme, the venue is held, and the call is made the evening before against the forecast.

Formats that work on this island

FormatGroup sizeDurationNotes
Beach challenge series20 – 200Half or full dayThe default. Scales well, low weather dependency beyond rain itself.
Island amazing race30 – 120Full dayBoats plus land stations. Coordination cost rises steeply above 120.
Water sports competition20 – 80Half dayKayak, SUP, swimming relays. Needs calm sea — check the season.
CSR beach clean-up20 – 200Half dayProduces a written report for ESG files. Increasingly the most requested format.
Cooking challenge20 – 70Half dayKitchen capacity is the ceiling. Above 70 it becomes a demonstration.
Indoor problem-solving20 – 200Half dayThe rain plan, and a legitimate choice in its own right for analytical teams.

The CSR option, and why it is worth considering

Requests for CSR-format team building have grown sharply, and not because companies suddenly became more altruistic. It is because sustainability reporting now requires documented community activity, and a beach clean-up with a written report, participant list and photographic record satisfies a requirement that a sack race does not.

It also tends to be the activity people talk about afterwards, which is not what most planners expect.

One condition we insist on

CSR activity has to be genuinely useful or it is worse than doing nothing. We work with the same local partners repeatedly so the beach that gets cleaned stays on a maintenance schedule, rather than being cleaned for a photograph and abandoned. If a proposed activity is theatre, we will say so.

What is included

Common questions

None

How long should team building run?

Half a day for most groups. A full day works when it is an amazing race format with genuine variety, but a full day of beach challenges exhausts people and the last two hours produce nothing. If the brief says full day, we will usually propose half a day of activity and half a day of something else.

What if some delegates cannot or will not participate physically?

Every programme includes non-physical roles that carry real scoring weight — strategy, timekeeping, judging, creative tasks. This is designed in from the start rather than offered as an exemption on the day, which is what makes the difference between inclusion and visible accommodation.

Can team building be combined with a CSR activity?

Yes, and it is a good combination — competitive challenges in the morning, community activity in the afternoon. The competitive element gives energy, the community element gives the day a point beyond winning.

Is team building on the beach possible in the rainy season?

Sometimes, but it is not something to plan on. From June to September we would design the programme around an indoor or covered format and treat the beach as the upside if the weather cooperates, rather than the other way round.
